Car Accident

Drivers don’t pay attention to pedestrians. Over 2,000 people get hit by cars each year in Denton,TX. More of the people on the phone or texting get hit or into accidents.

A local boy, David Valencia, was hit by a car this past Saturday at the mall. He walked out of H&M to the car. But this car was not paying attention to the speed bump and it was 15 mil per hour. He still got hit by a red Mustang, which hit his leg and flipped him over the car. Someone called 911. They rushed the local boy to Presbyterian Hospital, and he left the same night with a cast on his broken leg, but it was not easy to walk.

Drivers need to be more careful of people walking, as well as other cars on the road. Over 50% percent of all Americans will be involved in a vehicle accident in their lifetime, whether it be while as a pedestrian, as a driver, or as a passenger in a car.

Black Friday Violence

Have you witnessed any fights or violence at any popular local stores? You might have if you’ve been shopping during Black Friday. Well, a local boy was a witness to some violence at his local store on Loop 288 Wal-Mart in Denton, Texas.

The witness, Demani Stewart, gave an interview telling the story from the beginning. ”It was a long afternoon waiting in the car for my mom. We got to Wal-Mart and a crowd of people were shoving each other. We waited for the crowd to get thin so we could browse the store when all of a sudden two grown men fought for a 50-inch flat-screen tv. They were $650 but now they are $335 both started to argue then pushing then fighting. One of the men was African-American tall and buff, the other was an inch shorter and scrawny. They both supported the same college based on the t-shirts they were wearing..”

Statistics show that one out of 20 Black Friday shoppers will break out into a fight or violence of some sort. Is it really worth getting hurt or worse during black Friday shopping?

Soccer

At North Lakes Park on a hot summer morning, the soccer fields are full of youth soccer players. One morning a young soccer player named Kevin Santiago was having his first soccer game. His mom said excitedly, “I am so happy that he is starting his first season of soccer”. The coaches and referees  volunteers to help out in the games and the kids are all broken up into teams by age groups. Some of the benefits that these kids get from playing soccer are that they get exercise. They do things like running up and down the field and scrimmages to help with communication amongst the team mates and build relationships.  The young kids approximately get 30 minutes of game time plus 2 practices a week and from the soccer games, they learn how to communicate with teammates and learn good sportsmanship. Soccer is a good sport to play when you are young and if you get hooked on it you can play it for the rest of your life.

Pep Rally Failure

Most schools have Pep Rallies to honor future or past events. It was a normal sunny day at Calhoun the students weren't that exciting but some were cause they could have 5 min to be released early. The students were waiting to see what show would be in the Pep Rally. Students were anticipating on seeing their friends.  The six graders were more excited than the other grades because it was their first Pep Rally, the energetic students filled the Mac Allister Gym, all the students and teachers on the campus were theirs. The heated gym grew hotter the bleachers were filled with sweaty students still excited about the Pep Rally starting, Jackson has felt the heat and said “ The Gym is hotter than ever. “ As he told the teacher they have told him “ We can't do anything, we don't have control .“ Jackson looked in defeat knowing the teachers couldn't do anything. The teachers then realized it was hot in the gym they have to deal with it for the whole game. The game ended the students left in relief from the gym, one of the teachers went to the office to let them know that the gym’s air conditioner wasn't working. Now they know that the bottom gym may have some difficulty in the air conditioner.

Trails In Denton

There is a new trail in Denton, and it is open from 11:30 am to 6:00 pm, it also is about 20 minutes from Calhoun Middle School. It is called  North Lakes Park. It cost the city 350,500 dollars to build and has been open for about a month now. The trail is rocky and bumpy it also is only for bikes and goes all around the park. It has tall  green trees all around the trail. This 14-year-old boy, John, loves the new trail. John said,” I try to go there three times every week”. He loves the smell of fresh air and the trees he also loves looking at all the animals while riding by. This lake  is there for people who want to go fishing or just relax by the water. Also for those who like to walk there is a pathway for walkers.

The Class Meeting

Isaac a kid in 5th grade. For weeks and months, Isaac has been getting bullied about his weight.
About one person in 5,000 - 15,000 dies by suicide every year. In 5th grade Language arts class with a teacher named Mrs. Foster. Was getting the kids to gather around to have a meeting. All the 5th graders shared what they did over the weekend. After some kids shared it was Isaac’s turn. He looked upset and something was on his mind. He looked like he was struggling to answer the question. He then opened his mouth and spoke with fear. “I was at my house over the whole weekend and I…” He choked on his words. “I grabbed a rope and tried to kill myself…” He burst into tears crying to the teacher and students. Then he showed the rope burn on his neck. Some of the classmates cried. Mrs. Foster took him out of the class. The students sat there to themselves thinking about what just happened. Issac wasn't in his regular classes for about 2 - 3 weeks.  Eventually, all the students figured out why he did it and why he wasn't in his classes . He was under pressure and just couldn't take it anymore. From everyone and everything he just was so isolated and in pain. The bullies did stop bullying him. But if killing yourself or at least trying makes bullies stop then what's the point of fighting?

First Day of School

Calhoun Middle School may be a scary place for brand new 6th graders, but it is not a bad place. It is a fun learning environment. Students are beginning a new chapter of their new lives.

Teachers and administrators welcome the students and point the way to their classes to meet their new teachers and new classmates. When lunch happens some students may be lonely not knowing where to sit. If they choose a random table with new kids, they may just make a new friend.

At lunch, there is a boy named Kevin  who makes a bunch of friends at lunch. This 6th grader says,’’I'm enjoying this school and I can’t wait to come back to school tomorrow’’.

After the last bell rings, and when school is over there are cars full of parents waiting for their kids to finish. All in all kids are happy with their first day of school. The parents were relieved to see  how much fun did they have

The Gym

Every year at calhoun  middle school , There is a basketball game against the coaches and the 8th grade athletes. The whole school walks around buzzing about this game. It is a time to play against teachers the kids love and some not so much. Every kid in the building is invited to the game. Last year, the game was held in the Mc Alister gym. When it was about to begin people were screaming and running around trying to find a place to sit.  As the game kicked off, One of the players, Mark was on the court. Bystanders could see in his face that she was nervous about playing against the coaches. The cheerleaders were cheering on their peers. Bystanders could hear chants like , “ Big G little O, GO COUGARS GO”! The stance was filled with students who made bets against the coaches with other students and vice versa. In the middle of the game, an 8th-grade basketball boy named Mario tried  to shoot the ball and missed and slams into a random cheerleader. Everybody asked her, ``Are you ok?'' she replied, ``Yes, I'm ok“. Mario never even said sorry, he ran back to get in the game. It was the end of the game, the coaches defeated the eighth-grade athletes. They remain undefeated.

Fall Me

An athlete tearing a muscle is and will be the worst pain he or she will never forget. It is not just tearing a muscle that athletes have to worry about. An example is, DeWayne wanted to be on the basketball team and the coach allowed him to play in the first game. Due to an unbalanced diet, he got many injuries like twisting an ankle, multiple cramps, and low stamina. You could tell on his face that it was very painful and his first year was not good. That athlete's story is more common than you think.

Lots of people injure themselves and the results are wild. Over 34% of athletes will end up with season ending injuries like: ACL/MCL tears, broken bones, concussions, or even brain damage. There is a way that future athletes can prevent this from happening like eating healthy foods, stretching before and after practices and games, drinking lots of water or Gatorade which replenishes your electrolytes, and getting the sleep you need

Breaking Bad

It was a sunny Wednesday in august, lunch was over kids were going down up and sideways trying to get to their next class. kids yelling playing to try to get their last few drops of energy out of their system. When out of nowhere was Tyler minding his own business got his backpack yanked back by bob that apparently had beef with each other and got a knuckle sandwich right into his head,” Wham”, kids immediately started running yelling screaming trying to see what was going down the whole freaking crowd started to form, around Tyler and bob that were fighting hit after hit did the crowd start yelling and screaming even more, the Tyler who got his backpack yanked got quite a few good licks on bob but unfortunately bob was quicker and faster and made Tyler stop hitting bob and pull his hands to protect his head from getting hit by bob, until finally a counselor came in and stopped the fight, unfortunately, bob and Tyler got suspended and got in trouble by their mom's.

FIELD DAY

Field day is an event every student will remember.
It was a cloudy day outside at Newton Razor
Elementary School. As the teachers started dismissing the students Kevin being one of

them was so excited about field day. Kevin said, ‘‘It’s like a big party Music, Food, Bounce, houses, Rock Climbing wall, and a petting zoo. Food trucks and snow cone shops come to the school on Field day. Kids have lots of fun on field day playing with their friends walking around and eating food from the food trucks. Overall Field day is just a day where the kids get to have fun for completing their assignments and work over the entire year.

Fights are Harmful

20% of kids ages 11-14 get in a fight during their middle school years an example of this. Two girls at Calhoun middle school got into an argument over a joke that escalated fast they threw a  couple punches at each other. Later that day an interview Sophia Desmangles states that “The fight was pointless and uncalled for” Before the fight, Sophia had her doubts but then gave into them. Fights can be danger 5% of people get seriously injured in fights at school once girl head was slammed against. In conclusion conclusion Sophia Desmangles says fights are pointless and stupid.

The Dentention

It was at Calhoun Middle School at a classroom. The subject was math. So Ms.Hermanson was teaching the classroom. Everyone was speaking loud and weren't doing their work. The students never expected a detention that they will never forget.

COUSINS

It was a hot summer day he was walking up the stairs and to the door to talk

To his cousins' room to talk to the cousins he opened the door and found two cousins doing alabama stuff the cousins screamed and told  me not to tell anyone the kid said no the cousins had to bribe the kid and the secret has not been spilled till this day.

KARMA

There was a junior bull riding championship at the 440 Ranch in Aubrey Texas but the younger kids had to ride sheep instead of bulls because they're really little. At first the game was going smoothly and nobody got hurt yet...until this one kid named Jackson was too little to ride the bulls but he lied about his age so he could go. Then they got him on the bull and the announcer said 3...2...1...GO! The kid only lasted 5 seconds on the bull until he fell off. When Jackson did fall off the bull jumped around and stepped on the kid and broke 3 of his ribs. He was rushed to the hospital immediately, luckily the ambulance was already there in case someone got hurt. Jackson went to the hospital in the ambulance and his parents followed behind them. Everyone went home and the championship was canceled.

COUGAR DAY

Cougar day is an event that is a Calhoun tradition that happens annually in October.

It was that time a year again and all the students were buzzing about purchasing tickets for the festival. Jake a sixth-grader leaned over to his friend Mike and said, I'm more excited about the free day and not doing work in class. As the street got full of kids they walk or run to buy tickets for the games they spend like 10 min to buy some tickets some of the kids don't have the money but they were still having fun some of the students are talking to the teacher some of them get improper for play fight but the burpees of cougar day is for PTA they get the money and true the year they give us free stuff

The Fight

Alice` was standing In line talking with her friends. She had been in line since the cafeteria opened. While she was not paying attention Paige cut in front of her and Alice caught it in the corner of her eye. Alice and Paige had been enemies in the past.

Alice spun around and lashed out to Paige to move to the back but Paige said that she was there first and declined any evidence of cutting in line. Then Alice shouted at Paige to move and that just made things worse Paige was still not moving and Alice was getting really mad. Alice's face was turning as red as a tomato then Paige laughed.

Alice threw a light fist at Paige but her friends held her back. Paige just chuckled. That made Alice even more mad. Then Alice went and told Mr.Martens, and Mr.Martens told Paige that she had to move to the back of the line or she could come with him. Paige did not want to go with Mr.Martens so she apologized and went back to the line. She also thought that it was unnecessary to tell him about the attempted punch.

Middle School Struggles

It  was a sunny day and the day before the first day of school for the new 6th graders they were entering their new school and they were going to actually start school the next day , but that day was a get to know the school day for 6th graders so the 6th graders were exploring the school and getting to know their teachers…
But then came the next day which was the actual first day of school people were getting ready. Everything was going well for the kids until after lunch and some kids started a fight and it was 3 8th graders named Bob,Billy and Barnie were the kids who apparently had beef over the summer so they fought it out on the first day of school and 3 witnesses say it was a stupid fight and stupid to have a fight on the first day of school because it was barely even a fight and no one got hurt. Witnesses Zuri and Chloe
“This is going to be a great year”, some people say and some strongly disagree.

Statistics show that 1 in 4 schools have a fight on the first day of school, so this isn't too rare according to researchers. What do you expect its middle school?
